Andorra, 23 September 2020.

Andbank has calculated the proceeds from the #tutambesumes grand charity gala that was held at the Park Hotel in Andorra la Vella on 30 January. The event brought together more than 400 attendees and raised 110,000 euros, 50% of which will go to supporting research into childhood cancer, while the other 50% will provide financial aid to support Andorran families with children treated at Sant Joan de Déu.

This charitable gala received the support of the Andorran Government and was organised by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the SAAS (Andorran Health Care Service) and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital. It was presented by Ramon Pellicer, the popular TV3 journalist, and it featured a performance by international soprano Ainhoa Arteta. Some of the country’s leading chefs (Marc Mora, Carles Flinch, Ramon Sasplugas, Christian Zanchetta, Clàudia Coma, Jordi Guerrero, Pep Ramos and Carolina Marticella) also took part by preparing a special menu for the evening.

The money raised was the result of the donations and contributions from sponsors and the draw for two magnificent pieces of jewellery (donated by Fabergé and Cristina Cerqueda) and two footballs signed by Leo Messi, an event that was held for the attendees on behalf of the Andorran institutions, society and business sector. In this regard, the cooperation of Andbank, the main sponsor and organiser, and the 30-plus companies and entities that took part was key.

Support for research into childhood cancer

50% of the total proceeds from the gala will go to research into childhood cancer and the “Precision Oncology” grant, a multi-disciplinary programme that seeks to design a safer and more effective therapeutic treatment plan for children who suffer from relapses. This grant will mean that the programme run for two years.

The study is based on the molecular information generated by a genomic study of the tumour at the time of its recurrence or progression, at which point it is resistant to standard treatments. This study also enables analysis of the state of activation of the proteins that play a highly important role in the molecular pathways, for a pharmacological approach and clinical trials in which our patients can take part.

Support in the course of the oncological treatment

The other 50% raised will go to providing financial aid for Andorran families with children suffering from cancer during the course of their oncological treatment at Sant Joan de Déu. Thus, €27,500 will be allocated to the programme to support families with limited resources, to finance their accommodation at special residences (the Casa dels Xuclis, the Casa McDonald’s, Petit Món, etc.), to provide food and to cover travel expenses so as to promote the family relationship. This aid will depend on each particular case. With the remaining €27,500, the Andorran Ministry of Health will supplement the contributions received by these families if necessary.

About Sant Joan de Déu

The Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital is a centre devoted exclusively to maternal and child healthcare, a flagship for childhood cancer care and an international leader in the treatment of specific kinds of tumours. It’s the hospital that treats the most cases of childhood cancer in Spain (and one of the leading ones in Europe): 215 new cases each year and 70 more for recurrences and second opinions.

Sant Joan de Déu is one of the few European centres that has an exclusive paediatric tumour bank, with great potential for research. Since 2015, 22 children from Andorra have been treated for oncological diseases at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital as a result of the partnership agreement with the SAAS, whereby children from Andorra are treated at the hospital in the event that they are diagnosed with cancer.

With the signing of this agreement, in addition to receiving the very best treatments, families who so require will also obtain logistical and financial support to be able to be at the side of their sick children.
