Andorra, 19 August 2019.

As part of Andbank’s sponsorship of the Andorran Olympic Committee (AOC), the Bank has today announced its support and hosted a press conference with the Andorran team for the second Mediterranean Beach Games. The Games will be held in the Greek town of Patras from 25 to 31 August.

At these Games, Andorra will be represented by beach volleyball players Diego Suárez and Gerard Verdú, with coach Daniel Torres.

The Patras Games follow the first Mediterranean Beach Games held in Pescara in Italy in 2015, in which 900 athletes took part and competed for 175 medals in 11 sporting disciplines.

On that occasion, Andorra was represented by Josep Maria Blat and Gaspar Pellicer in sea canoeing. This year it will be the turn of Verdú and Suárez, two remarkably young and high profile competitors. Their competitive histories both include the 2018 Games of the Small States of Europe Under 19 competition, held in Portobello (Scotland), where Verdú took gold.

Josep M. Cabanes Sots – Managing Director of Domestic Banking at Andbank – opened the press conference with words of welcome and reiterated the Bank’s support of AOC because “[we believe in all our sportsmen and sportswomen and we must give them the opportunity to show their worth, which is why we support them wholeheartedly”

In the words of [Justo Ruiz, Minister for Sport, “[as the sportsman that I was, one of the most significant milestones in the career of any athlete is to represent your country.”

President of the AOC Jaume Martí commented “as such a small country, beach volleyball is one of the few team sports that we can compete in at games like these.”

Andbank has supported the Andorran Olympic Committee (AOC) as an official sponsor since 2004. Last year it renewed its association up to 2021, which will take in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the 2021 Games of the Small States of Europe, to be held in Andorra.

Andbank’s support for AOC should be seen in the context of its overall commitment to sport in Andorra, which was demonstrated just a few days ago with the successful fifth Purito Andorra – with a record field of 2800 competitors – and which extends to its support for the cross-country ski team of the Andorran Skiing Federation (FAE) and for the Andorran Swimming Federation (FAN).
